The gap in political interest between young and old has grown steadily since 1967, according to data collected for the Australian Election Study, a long-term project at the Australian National University. In 2010, only around 70 per cent of those aged between 18 and 29 said they had ''a good deal of'' or ''some'' interest in politics, compared with 80 per cent of 30 to 59-year-olds and 85 per cent of people over 60. Engaging youth in the political cycle is the key to the future strength of our democracy.
